Open Digital

A publication on the open digital landscape

About

What Open Digital is, how it relates to the firm, and how it is made.

Open Digital is a publication on the open digital landscape: digital health, AI, the open source ecosystem, funding and business. It publishes analysis, observations and reports from practice, and it covers the space between policy and implementation, where intentions meet the organisations and people that have to deliver them.

What it covers

Digital Health
Health systems, health data, and the shared infrastructure beneath them.
AI
What AI changes for the people who build, buy and are answerable for software.
Open Source Ecosystem
The shared software layer: who maintains it, who depends on it, and what the rules now ask of both.
Funding
How shared software gets paid for: public money, private money, and the routes between them.
Business
Running a software or services business in a market where the software is a commons.
Talks
Reports on talks given and on working-group, conference and consultation activity, because they are part of the work.

Editorial stance

Plenty is written about policy intent and high-level strategy; much less about what happens when those intentions reach an organisation trying to deliver. This publication occupies that second space. It prefers evidence over advocacy, specifics over generalities, and the second-order question over the first.

Pieces that argue a position are marked as opinion wherever they appear and are collected at /opinion. Where a piece reports rather than argues, it says so. Articles are written in the first person under the author's byline.

Relationship to the firm

Open Digital is operated by Open Digital Consulting, an advisory firm working on open source governance, digital sovereignty and digital transformation. The publication is a place to publish, not a place to sell: nothing here is promotional, and contact, services and products live at opendigital.cc. The footer link is the whole of the commercial surface of this site.

The .info domain hosts community resources: this publication and a video archive at media.opendigital.info.

Contributing

Contributions from practitioners, researchers and operators with something specific to say are welcome. Send a short outline to editor@opendigital.info: what the piece is about, what it argues or observes, and why it matters now. Reports from real implementations, analysis grounded in hands-on experience, and views from outside the Anglophone open source mainstream are of most interest; general arguments for open source as a category, vendor comparisons, and anything that reads as marketing are not.
